Moretonhampstead Development Trust was set up in 1995 by a partnership including Moretonhampstead Parish, Teignbridge District and Devon County Councils. It was established at a time when the Town was perceived to be in decline, with the aim of promoting the economic and social regeneration of the Town.
The Economic Development Plan (E.D.P.), which led to the establishment of the Trust, was written at a time when the area was suffering from serious economic decline. It identified the Town’s principal problems and called on a range of statutory and voluntary groups to co-operate in regenerating the Town, it proposed an action plan under the broad headings of:
1) tourism development & marketing of the Town
2) environmental and traffic alleviation measures
3) business development
4) population increase through provision of housing
5) services and facilities for families and young people
Today the Trust is working on a number of local projects including the development of the Old School into a vibrant community centre, the Moretonhampstead Community Website, a learning centre established in the library and covering a variety of subject areas for adults, a photocopier service for local people and businesses and other projects working closely with the Parish Council, the Moreton Business Association and other local organisations.
