Past Events

Satyananda Yoga Dartmoor Group has organised Yoga events in the area for a number of years, including a one day festival which drew 70+ people from as far away as Wales and Cornwall interested in Yoga.

Satyananda Yoga Dartmoor held an evening of Kirtan(devotional singing and chanting) in December 2009 in Bovey Tracey, where participants also enjoyed a taste of indian food and chai.

In March 2010 SYD organised a free ‘taster’ evening for people to come and try Kirtan and Ayurvedic food. The evening was kindly sponsored by Devon County Council.

SYD continue to organise regular evenings of Kirtan in the local area.

About Satyananda Yoga

Satyananda Yoga draws inspiration from the three spiritual masters which make up the current lineage: Swami Sivananda Saraswati, Swami Satyananda Saraswati and Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati. Bihar School of Yoga

Swami Satyananda Saraswati

Swami Satyananda Saraswati is a great visionary whose mission has been the development of an integrated yoga system which incorporates practical philosophy and a wholistic lifestyle.

Swami Satyananda is considered to be one of the major forces in bringing yoga the West. He traveled the world tirelessly for over twenty years sharing the inspiration of yoga. He has brought to light ancient yogic teachings from sacred scriptures and lost traditions. He has framed them in a modern language which incorporates both traditional and scientific understandings. He wrote over 80 boks on Yoga, Tantra and Spirituality. Sri Swamiji retired from public life in 1988 to work for mankind’s upliftment in a more universal way.

Paramahamsa Swami Satyananda died at his ashram in Rikhia, Jharkand on December 5th, 2009.

Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati

In 1988 Swami Satyananda passed on the world-wide coordination of Satyananda Yoga to his successor Swami Niranjanananda, a modern master of yoga whose understanding spans both the scientific Western culture and the mystical wisdom of the East. Known as a yogi from birth, he began his training in India at the age of four. From the age of eleven he toured extensively in Europe, America and Australia. This experience gave him a deep understanding of the Western mind and society. Swami Niranjanananda has the wisdom of a seer and an ability to convey yoga’s timeless truths in an accessible and meaningful way. He exemplifies the harmony and fortitude of a yogi and inspires all who encounter him.
